The General Practice Rural Incentives Program (GPRIP) commenced on 1 July 2010. GPRIP was funded in the 2009-10 Budget as part of the Rural Health Workforce Strategy.
The program aims to encourage medical practitioners to practice in rural and remote communities and to promote careers in rural medicine. It combines two previously separate retention incentive programs available to General Practitioners (GPs) and Registrars, and provides a new relocation grant. GPRIP comprises:
The Rural Health Workforce Strategy encompasses a number of initiatives that aim to better target workforce incentives to communities in greatest need. The reforms are based on:
* Scaling or gearing of incentives and return of service obligations to provide greatest benefits to the most remote communities where there is the greatest need; and
* Transition of program eligibility to the new Australian Standard Geographical Classification - Remote Areas. ASGC-RA system.
Scaling is an incentive applied to a range of existing programs that commenced on 1 July 2010. The concept of scaling means that benefits derived will be significantly greater for doctors that chose to live and work in more remote areas as described in the ASGC-RA system.
Minimum requirements
* Applicants should be registered to work in Australia/New Zealand or eligible to do so.
* Have a minimum of 2 years Australian experience
* Be a fellow with the RACGP
* Be a motivated medical officer wanting to make a contribution to Rural communities.
